Transatlantic Slave Trade In Venezuela
Slavery in Venezuela and along with the rest of the countries in the America's were nothing like slavery in the countries prior. According to videos like "TED-Ed" slavery for the first time ever is for a person's entire life, and it is based on race. Prior slavery was something that happened when an empire was conquered and the "slaves"were prisoners of war. Also, they were more of indentured servants that could work their way to freedom.In the countries like Venezuela slavery back breaking work that was forced upon African Slaves and their descendants for years come. Garnishing the Spanish empire millions & billions of dollars off that free labor. According to www.Cambridge.org (Alex Borucki) "11,500 enslaved Africans arriving in Venezuela directly from Africa, estimating 101,000 captives were disembarked.
Resistance To Slavery In Venezuela
These African Imports resisted what was being forced upon them in many different ways. One of the major ways that these Venezuelan slaves fought back was by literally fighting back, "Slave Revolts". According to "Afro-Venezuelan" wikipedia.org "1532: Slave revolt led by El Negro Miguel ("Rey Miguel") an escaped slave from common day Puerto Rico who founded a Cimarron or Cumb (an escaped Slave Settlement) and had proclaimed himself king." One major revolt that lead to the independence of this country was helped done by another Latin Black republic, Haiti. The African culture in the country now is not at all very prominent and by first glance, some can say it is hardly their. However, in recent years Venezuela have tried to get back in touch with their African roots by helping it's fellow latin country Haiti. Along with helping relationships with African nations. "Venezuela has taken it's first steps towards recognizing and celebrating it's African heritage-and treating Afro-Venezuelans as the central part of the country's identity that they are.
